Cooling Down With a Slushie

Exercising on a hot day can be challenging for even the most experienced athlete. The higher the temperature, the harder it is for your muscles to get the proper blood circulation. So, the answer seems obvious: keep your body cool before that intense work out. And while ice baths and cooling vests may work for some people, one researcher is saying there is a much simpler solution.

A study from New Zealand shows actual endurance improvement in recreational athletes who drank a slushie before working out. The syrup flavored ice, filled with all it’s sugar, helped subjects run longer on the treadmill of a hot room. The average participant ran 50 minutes before they had to stop. Those who only drank syrup flavored cold water ran for 40 minutes.

According to the researchers using slushies lower brain temperature more effectively than water. Before trying this on your next run outside, watch out for brain freeze!
