At the Theatre with David Richardson

Here's David's latest review:

The course of true love never did run smooth and it sure doesn’t in the Public’s version of " A Midsummer Night’s Dream", which is now playing at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park.

This is another brand new version of "Midsummer’s Night Dream" and while not as wonderful as Peter Brooks’ version some 40 years earlier, it’s fun and makes an evening in Central Park worth the effort of getting there.

As a quick refresher "AMND" is one of Shakespeare’s comedies which is about the exploration of love amongst many and how it is all turned around by a fairy named Puck who makes a huge mistake by applying love potions to the wrong people.

The story matters not since everything for once in a Shakespeare play turns out well but if it’s to be enjoyed it has to have a good cast and in this version there is one.

First there’s Mireille Enos as Hermia who defies death to get her man. Then there’s Martha Plimpton who steals the show while playing Helena the other woman.

Laila Robbins (Heartbreak House) is also here as the sexy Titania who spends most of the evening sleeping in a huge tree, which is the only piece of scenery on the entire stage.

Another big plus are the costumes which are a joy to watch especially when layer upon layer of skirts are ripped off as the play gets sillier and sillier. Unfortunately the play falls into complete slapstick at the end which is prolonged some 15 minutes after the story is over. Frankly I thought it was stupid but the audience seemed to roar with laughter at every pratfall.

The slapstick being aside, you will enjoy "AMND " because being in the park is just one of New York’s great joys and the best part of course is that tickets are free. Tickets are available the day of the performance and can be picked up either at the Delacorte starting at 1 PM or at the home of the Public Theater at 425 Lafayette Street (Astor Place subway stop) from 1 to 3. If you really wanna go I suggest you get in line early.

If you go, grab a couple of bottles of wine, some bread and cheese, maybe a blanket and chocolate chip cookies, and munch and drink away outside the gates until the 8 o’clock showtime. By the way there’s food and wine sold there if you don’t wish to carry the goodies for the long walk from the Fifth Avenue entrance to the park or the short walk from the Central Park West entrance.
