Choosing a diet without salt may have you avoiding some serious medical conditions. Researchers suggest if Americans cut back on their salt intake, as many as 150,000 premature deaths could be prevented each year.
The average American consumes about 3,500 milligrams of sodium a day - that’s twice as much the recommended amount, according the American Heart Association. Although sodium can regulate blood pressure, too much salt could lead to an increased risk of heart attacks, strokes, asthma, kidney stones, osteoporosis and stomach cancer.
Americans’ salt consumption has risen 50% in the past four decades and experts believe this is the result of more processed foods. Studies show most people’s cravings drop after a few weeks of cutting back. The solution: cook from scratch, eat fresh foods, and cut back on restaurant dining. By exercising, drinking moderately and eating smart, you can reduce your sodium sensitivity.
