On A Clear Day You Can See Forever

Harry Connick Jr. opened last night in a revival of On Clear Day You Can See Forever, but you would never know it since he is responsible for almost nothing in the show except some snippets from dull songs.

David Turner who plays a gay florist seems to be the star, and he gets to sing all the wonderful songs from this show including my favorites "Hurry It’s Lovely Up Here" and "What Did I Have That I Don’t Have". He sings them well too! Harry eventually does get to sing part of the tuneful "Too Late Now", and the title song, but so does the rest of the cast at the end of the show. The story, which has been reworked from the 1965 original, is impossible to follow, but if you keep your eye on the floral arranger you might be able to figure out what’s going on in this rather long two act dull show.

There are some hypnotic hijinks in the show, and if you stare at the opening curtain or even the set you may also end up hypnotized. I would call it psychedelic memorization going on up there if you know, and you probably don’t know, what I mean.

I am a huge Harry Connick Jr. fan but maybe next time he should think about doing a Hugh Jackman type presentation in which he could play a piano. It must be tough to see the lines form for Hugh's show and no lines for himself. Again, I can hum and sing just about every song from this Lerner and Lane winner now if only the rest of A Clear Day You Can See forever was worth watching.
