Three more shows to open on Broadway this year, and I have no idea why producers are forcing reviewers to see shows during the holidays. At this time of year the productions tend to get short changed by a lot of us !
Last night’s opening was called "Stick Fly", a comedy that has played many of the regionals for years. I must admit I didn’t know what the title meant, but later found out it refers to someone interested in the flight patterns of flies. The ambiguity of that concept, and storyline, somehow managed to keep me entertained.
The wealthy head of a black family is living in a mansion in Martha’s Vineyard, and he has asked his two sons to join him for what looks to be a long weekend. One of them is engaged and the other has brought along his gorgeous white girlfriend. Also along for the fast ride is a granddaughter taking over for the maid, or is that her mother? She is a hoot!
The engaged girl seems to have had an affair with the other brother, the stand-in maid has more going on than meets the eye, and the father with the invisible wife seems to be carrying some sort of secret. While the plot continues to twist and complicate, there's a big scandal afoot and... well if you care about all this go see it yourself!
"Stick Fly" is way better than some folks had told me, and way funnier too. The cast is excellent, but be prepared for some confusion. It’s OK to stick with "Stick Fly" but with "On a Clear Day" in horizon, which opens this Sunday with Harry Connick Jr. and David Turner, it's hardly competition.
