(New York, New York – January 3, 2007) WOR Radio 710 HD announced a new date today for their three 700-foot tall radio towers, which have been a fixture on the New Jersey Turnpike in Lyndhurst for over 40 years, to come crashing down (safely) in a ceremony to be held on Thursday, January 11th, 2007 at 11:00am. These towers were originally set to fall on Wednesday, September 20th, 2006, at 10:00am, but the demolition was halted due to security concerns surrounding 9-11 and being able to notify the public of the event in a timely manner. These are WOR’s 4th set of towers, on which construction began in 1965 and was completed in 1967.
WOR’s vice president and corporate director of engineering, Tom Ray, explained the event, stating, “The decommissioning of our Lyndhurst transmitter facility is the culmination of a 5-year project to relocate the WOR transmitter facility due to the EnCap Golf redevelopment of that area. While these towers and the Lyndhurst site have served us well, the construction of our new site caps off two years of construction where WOR was rebuilt from the tips of the microphones to the tops of the towers. From top to bottom, WOR now has possibly the most technologically advanced broadcast facility in the City, which is very good for our listeners.”
After years of planning, building and fine-tuning, WOR has switched over to our new towers, located half a mile north in Rutherford, NJ. The new towers are 658-feet tall and the first newly-built towers for a 50,000 watt New York City radio station in years. The brand-new, state-of-the-art facility was built from the ground up and is completely digital. It employs two identical main and backup transmitters.
The ceremony is closed to the public. |
