Throughout the day, WOR listeners will receive information on how they can help victims of domestic violence through segments on The WOR Morning Show with Joe Bartlett and Donna Hanover, The Joan Hamburg Show, Food Talk with Michael Colameco, and Henican & White. In addition, The Dr. Joy Browne Show will originate from the Family Justice Center (12noon-2pm) on that day. Dr. Joy Browne sits on board of the Mayor’s Commission to Combat Domestic Violence.
About New York City’s Family Justice Center New York City’s Family Justice Center opened its doors to Brooklyn residents on July 25, 2005. It serves as one-stop center for domestic violence victims, by co-locating service providers in one building, so that victims need only go to one location to have their multiple needs met. Victims of domestic violence are typically resolving multiple service needs simultaneously, such as housing, public assistance, criminal justice issues, and counseling. The center provides legal, social, faith-based, and language interpretation services in one centrally located building. The Kings County District Attorney's Office is the primary partner with the Mayor’s Office on Combating Domestic Violence on this initiative, and has co-located its entire staff of Assistant District Attorneys, counseling unit, and support staff to the new site. A total of 151 individuals work at the location, coming from 5 City agencies, 13 community groups, 6 religious organizations, and 5 universities. This was the first center of its kind to be opened under President Bush’s Family Justice Center Initiative, and is located in one of 15 communities chosen under the President’s initiative to prevent and respond to violence against women. Locations in Queens and the Bronx are slated to open soon. (www.nyc.gov/html/ocdv) |
