Working Out Under The Weather

Every now and then you’ll find moments in life where the planets aline, the stars match together and as if by some cosmic force of energy you feel the need to convince yourself that today is the day you are going to be different. Today, you will stick to that fitness regiment you made for yourself back in January.

Your Nike's are waiting in the closet, you have a fridge packed with organic foods, and your iPod is blinking fully charged. Then, with an ironic twist of fate, your throat begins to feel sore, your muscles are achy, and maybe, just maybe, you’re getting a splitting migraine.

Do not feel defeated! Now is not the time to crawl back into bed with Ben&Jerry. Take a second to realize that you have some other options and you CAN still in fact workout.

Assess your sickness. If you have a fever, skipping the gym would probably be beneficial to all parties involved but exercising with a cold may be OK. A good rule of thumb is if your symptoms are above your neck (sore throat, nasal congestion, sneezing or tearing eyes) then it’s OK to exercise!

Adapting your workout plan by lessening your fitness workload. If you normally do an hour of cardio plus walking on the treadmill, stick to just walking. You’re still getting the exercise but your doing it at a pace that will accommodate how you’re feeling.

There are also plenty of workouts just as challenging but less strenuous on larger muscle groups. Knock the intensity level down a notch and maybe today will be the day you try yoga, or take an hour out of your day to stretch instead of tone. If that’s not what you enjoy, try walking around the block to at least get your heart rate up.

Know your limits and allow dedication to be your new mantra. If not, you can always make it up when you are feeling better.
