There seems to be a science behind buying airfare if you’re trying to save an extra buck.
Arthur Frommer sat down with Scott Meyerowitz, the airlines reporter for the Associated Press, who says with the advent of online shopping, airfare prices are varying from minute to minute and day to day. Research suggests you could save some money if you're conscious of these patterns.
Meyeroqitz explains three simple rules to follow: buy domestic flights about 4-6 weeks before your departure, order them on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday and make sure you're flying on a weekday and not weekend.
Research shows airlines are more likely to offer sale prices between that Tuesday through Thursday window and in terms of domestic fares, the best days to fly are weekdays. It’s also a good idea to find that happy-medium of advance purchase, not too early but not too late since last minute flights usually spike in price.
