While the Giants and Patriots fight for the Super Bowl title, their city mayors will be joining forces.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino will appear together in a pro gun-control commercial during Sunday's Super Bowl XLVI game.

The two mayors lead a nonprofit organization called Mayor Against Illegal Guns Coalition, and are using the high profile air time to spread their message. The Super Bowl spot will promote tighter gun control restrictions and reduced flow of illegal guns into cities.

The nonprofit was founded in 2006 and is made up of 600 mayors. Their goal is protect the rights of Americans to own guns, while fighting to keep criminals from possessing guns illegally.

Bloomberg tells WOR "We agree on getting guns out of the hands of criminals, out of the hands of people with psychiactric problems, and out of the hands of kids. And there are frederal laws that actually say they cannot buy guns but the Congress doesn't appropriate enough money to enforce the laws."

A spokesman for Menino's office told The Boston Business Journal he does not know the length of the ad or the amount it cost. A 30-second, national Super Bowl ad typically costs about $3 million.
