Would You Pay $1,200 For a Pair of Jeans

Listen to the Podcast

Denim
There are jeans and then there are jeans. You can still go to Costco or Old Navy and spend less than $100 for a pair of jeans. In fact, someone I know just spent $20 for a good looking pair of jeans.

Then there are NY style jeans.  A few years ago, I did a story on Ernest Sewn, where I splurged on a $200 pair of jeans. Now, the creator of Ernest Sewn has gone one step further to create a custom jeans factory.

I’m going to tell you about this because it’s one of those “only in NY” stories, but it’s also a bit of a word of warning—I can’t believe that there are people out there who will spend literally over $1,000 for a pair of jeans. Yes, you heard me!

3 x 1 is a jeans store with a factory in the middle of the store. So, you can see your jeans being made.  You walk in to see 76 rolls of denim on the wall. There are over 135 different types of denim.

You can pick your buttons, stitching, fabric and more. You have a choice among the Limited Edition which is basically “off the shelf” although you can pick your own buttons and they’ll hem them for you. Those range from $295-$475. Then there’s the custom made—you pick the fabric, stitching, buttons and all the accessories—those are $595-$750. If you want what they call “Bespoke”—totally custom made pattern that you can re-use—it’s $1,200!

I tried on a pair of the limited edition just for fun. They looked good, but I could not get myself to spend $395 for them!

Leo
A friend of mine was raving about an off-broadway show called Leo that won the main prize at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.  I went to see it last week and it was interesting.

LEO, it’s a one man show with no speaking.  The performer is Tobias Wegner—who was trained as an acrobat.  The show takes place in a small three-walled space with each wall painted a different color. The performance is captured live on video—and the video screen is tilted at a 90 degrees.

So, when he is crawling on the floor it looks like he is walking up a wall.
It’s an old idea—think Fred Astaire dancing on the wall in singing in the rain. But, it’s very inventive and creative.

He draws chalk drawings on the wall which then comes to life through animation. So, it’s a combination of live performance, video and animation. It’s a real multimedia performance.

It’s only playing through February 5th. Tickets are $48.25 each.
