Have you ever been called eccentric due to the way you treat your pets?
I have always been an animal fanatic, ever since I can remember. I’ve always felt most comfortable when surrounded by my furry, feathered and finned friends. However, this type of behavior doesn’t come without some consequences. I have been called crazy by people who have never had the opportunity to really understand that special relationship that some people have with their pets. For example, during the recent disasters, we saw people refusing to leave without their pets. Some humans just don’t realize -- that to someone like myself or many of my listeners -- these are not just pets, but part of our family. So the question is: are we crazy, or are we merely more in tune with respecting and loving all of God’s creations?
This past Saturday (4/26), I broadcasted my show from the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books on the UCLA campus. There are some pictures from the event posted on my website, among them one with my favorite TV character Fonzy from Happy Days, Henry Winkler.
He's actually a listener of the Pet Show, and a very successful author of children's books! I also met Jon Provost, Lassie's best friend who has just written an autobiography. It's an amazing production; the world's largest literary event, worth an annual pilgrimage for any of you bibliophiles. Til next time,

Are We Micro-Managing Our Pets?
Personal trainers, doggy day care, hydrotherapy, pet massage, doggy camps and spas, play dates. Do our dogs need a ‘time-out’ from our over-scheduling them like kids, when all they want is to chase their tails?
There have been many situations recently where people, especially children, have been attacked or mauled by a dog. Just last night in Glendale CA, an infant was pulled away from the mother and mauled by the grandmother’s Rottweiler -- sadly the child died as a result of the attack.
Being a pet behaviorist, pet therapist and trainer for over thirty years, I consistently try to analyze changes in our pet’s behavior. In the 80’s, it was the two-income family leading to the "latch key pet", and even worse, separation anxiety -- one of the most common question asked on my radio show. So why the increase in attacks? Are we to blame?
I will go into this subject in more detail in future blogs. Let me start by saying that many trainers and so called behaviorist advocate that you have to be in charge you have to be the "ALPHA DOG." I ask you to think about this: Let’s say that one member of the family takes charge of the dog, and that individual is consistent and authoritative. This person then becomes the so-called "leader of the pack" or the "alpha." From the dog’s perspective, he had better challenge other family members for a higher position within the pack. That is where many aggressive problems begin. No one is a stronger advocate of training dogs then I, having personally supervised the training of over 40,000 pets. But isn’t it time that we let our dogs be dogs? When I was growing up, all the dogs in the neighborhood dug holes, barked from time to time and even peed in the house occasionally. Now we want our dogs to behave like little Lord Fauntleroy and that’s not good.
I am a firm believer that keeping your pet mentally stimulated and socialized is important, but there are times that we should let sleeping dogs lie.

WE LOVE TO SLEEP WITH OUR PETS
I can’t remember the last time I slept without having one of my pets in bed with me. I’ve always felt my pets joining me in bed is very comforting.
Did you hear about this new study by the Sealy Mattress Company?
They found that almost sixty-seven percent of the people they polled like to sleep with their pets and most of them actually enjoyed dozing with their pets rather than their regular bed companions.
Thirty-eight percent said that their pets disturbed their sleep time, while fifty-five percent of women complained that their men are more likely to take up most of the space at night.
Fourteen percent of men didn’t know which was more likely to keep them awake their woman or their pet.
How do you feel about pets in bed?
Here’s the big question: If your significant other said to you "HONEY IT’S ME OR THE PET IN THE BED" who would be sleeping on the couch?
This past weekend, I was broadcasting from America’s largest pet consumer show and had the opportunity to hang with a Guiness Book of World’s Record winner: Gibson, the world’s largest dog – over 7’3" on his hind legs! He actually stood on my shoulders and looked down on me. And not only that, I had the opportunity to eat a new Fair Favorite: fried Coca Cola. Not bad, but no need for seconds …

ANIMAL COMMUNICATORS: ARE THEY REAL?
Every day, Public Relations firms contact my office to see if I would interview their clients on my radio shows, almost all of them representing themselves as "animal communicators" -- a phenomenon in the last few years. Over the years I have worked with animals on almost every continent and have actually had the opportunity to meet and work with people that I believe were really capable of communicating with pets, using thoughts only. Maybe it’s something in the kibble, but it seems that all of a sudden, thousands of people are now claiming that they are capable of talking and listening to animals and are more than willing to tell you what your pet is thinking about. As I stated earlier, I have worked with animal psychics and have even been called an animal psychic myself, but I feel that my abilities strictly lie in my understanding animals mentally and physiologically from their perspective.
What do you think? Are there legitimate pet psychics, and if so, what should they be using their talents to accomplish? Do you think many pet owners, with their need to believe, are being ripped off because of some charlatans?
And on a different note, I’ve been living on the west coast for over decade, but everyone asks me what I miss most about New York – in no particular order: Nathan’s Dunkin Donuts, pizza without weird stuff (pineapple, tofu) and a good salt bagel!
